DVD copy protection is a blanket term for various methods of copy protection for DVDs. Many protection schemes rely on breaking compliance with DVD standards, leading to playback problems on some devices.

Detailed DVD Copy Protection Types

The knowledge of DVD copyright protection is just a tip of the iceberg. There are mainly six types of copy protection technologies applied to commercial DVD discs, including Disney New DVD Copy Protection,The Analog Protection System (APS), Commercial DVD CSS encryption, DVD Region Code, User operation prohibition (UOP), and Sony ARccOS DVD protection. Here we will have a look of these DVD copyright protection schemes in brief.
  • Disney New DVD Copy Protection: Commonly known as Disney X-Project DRM, it is probably the most complicated DVD copyright protection schemes used by Disney that even many professional DVD ripper or copy software cannot handle. Generally, the DVD encoded with Disney new copyright protection comes with 99 titles that many software fails to select the right one. And newer DVDs appear in an oversized way, up to 50GB, making it impossible to make a backup of it. Worse still, the Disney new copy protection scheme may lead to crash halfway during DVD copying process in many famous DVD rippers like Handbrake.
  • The Analog Protection System (APS): Another DVD copyright protection system originally developed by Macrovision. Videos copied from DVDs encoded with APS become garbled and unwatchable.
  • Sony ARccOS DVD protection: A copy-protection system used on most Sony DVDs. The system deliberately creates corrupted sectors on the DVD, which leads copying software to produce errors (see bad sector).
  • Content Scramble System (CSS) Encryption: An encryption system capitalizes on a proprietary 40-bit stream cipher algorithm, which was introduced to stop byte-for-byte copies of an MPEG (digital video) stream from being playable. This DVD copyright protection measure has been superseded by newer DRM scheme like CPRM that has 56-bit or 128-bit key sizes, providing a much higher level of security than the weak 40-bit key size of CSS.
  • DVD Region Code: This is achieved by way of region-locked DVD players, which will play back only DVDs encoded to their region. However, region-free DVD players, which ignore region coding, are also commercially available, and many DVD players can be modified to be region-free, allowing playback of all discs.
  • User operation prohibition (UOP): A form of use restriction on DVD discs. The viewers are prohibited from performing a large majority of actions on a DVD that is restricted by this scheme. Generally, copyright notices and FBI warning (in the United States) will be displayed if any of these actions are attempted. Some publishers also encode "protected" (i.e., "unskippable") commercials on their DVDs.Remove DVD Copyright Protection, Legal or Illegal?

Generally, backing up and ripping protected DVD to video formats stored in your own computer should not be a problem as long as you own the original. But making them available for upload or share them otherwise may be illegal, depending on the country you live in.Then what program should be used to rip these copy protected DVDs? Especially now when new copy protection technology are widely used in movies/DVDs released by Hollywood, Disney, Paramount, Warner Home Video, etc. The newly released film like Batman: The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers, Men in Black 3, Transformer 3, Up, and many other are well protected with the latest copy protection, it is difficult to copy and rip DVD to hard disk as common videos.
